Mineral, rock, fossil: what is what
According to the definition of the International Mineralogical Association, a mineral is an element or chemical compound that is usually crystalline and formed by geological processes. Examples of minerals are quartz, fluorite or malachite. A rock is a natural solid substance forming the Earth’s crust, which usually consists of a varied mixture of different minerals (e.g. granite made of quartz, feldspar and muscovite) or of organic remains (for example limestone formed by the calcareous shells of various marine organisms). In exceptional cases, a rock may consist of a single mineral (for example marble of calcite), or it may be amorphous and non-crystalline – volcanic glass is an example. A fossil is the remains or imprint of an ancient organism preserved in the Earth’s crust, such as an ammonite or petrified wood.
How to find your way around this category
Stones by type
How to choose a collector stone
- Raw or polished. Our range includes crystals and clusters in their natural shape as well as polished pieces that reveal the inner pattern of the stone.
- Locality. For pieces with a known locality, we state it in the description – for collectors this is an important detail.
- Size and proportion to the matrix. With clusters and crystals on matrix, also pay attention to the proportion of the crystals to the rock on which they grew.
Soft minerals
Minerals differ in hardness. Soft minerals, for example gypsum (selenite) with a hardness of 2 or fluorite with a hardness of 4, are easily scratched. Some minerals are not suitable for display outdoors, where long-term exposure to rain can gradually dissolve them, or water in micro-cracks can gradually break them apart. We will be happy to help you choose!
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between Minerals and Decorative stones?
Minerals cover our entire range of natural stones, including cut and investment stones. Decorative stones are a selection of pieces that work well as standalone decorations, mainly for the interior.
Can I see a stone before buying it?
Yes, at our store at Korunní 906/29 in Prague. For larger pieces, we recommend calling in advance.
Who is behind the selection
The 4C Minerals range is selected by our mineralogist. You can see the stones and jewellery at our store at Korunní 906/29 in Prague’s Vinohrady district, where we will be happy to help you choose. You can also ask us about the details of a specific piece by phone or e-mail.
